Importing files: Some file types (.tex, .odt) only show up under "All files"

Insert -> File does something different from Import -> File  :-)-O

"Subdocument" translates to "Child Document..." in LyX parlance.

Perhaps you can circumvent your issue by leaving the TeX material as 
child document :-)-O. You can do quite cool stuff by generating TeX at 
runtime (Makefile)
