Indeed, it is not shown by default, but scripts do not like being empty. 
This is something that is obvious to LaTeX users, so it never occurred 
to me that it could be an issue.

Note that it is the same for sums (sigma), limits and several others.

Section 10.2 of the math manual describes this.
