I asked the question above 11 days ago, but did not get any useful solutions. I have now solved the problem. I was using a 2.xx version of Python. Everything had seemed to be working until recently instant preview stopped working. I am not sure when; I use three machines, one older. Anyway, updating to Python 3.14 solved my problem.
