"Custom Item" problems in Beamer

LyX folk:

I’m trying to use “Custom Item” to replace the bullet in an enumerated list with a name for the numbered proposition in a Beamer document. But the number is still appearing and the intended name is showing up between square brackets (see the first two attachments). This happens regardless of whether the list is nested or whether I use Itemize rather than Enumerate. Is this some sort of Beamer bug? When I paste the passage in question into an ordinary LyX document, I get the desired result, as seen in the third attachment.

Help very much appreciated.
