Low quality instant preview of math

Maybe related. When I take a screenshot and paste it into LyX I get,
as per usual, an image that's twice the size it had on the screen,
because of the retina resolution. So I scale it down to 50% from the
graphics settings panel. Attached is how the result looks like vs the
same image in Preview. Instead, at 100% quality is comparable, it's
weird that it is scaling down so poorly.
