preview environment doesn't render in the document in 2.4.0?

I’ve found over the years that it pays to install the complete TeX package on any platform I’m working on. Tons of stuff gets installed that I won’t ever need, but it guarantees that everything I will need is there. And disk space is cheap and plentiful these days. :-)
