updating TexLive2023: failed

Yes:
  locate cp227.tcx
/usr/local/texlive/2023/texmf-dist/web2c/cp227.tcx

Interesting. There are several pdftex here:
[root at salmo /usr/local/texlive/2023/bin/x86_64-linux]# ll pdftex
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2269928 Feb 23  2023 pdftex*
and
/usr/share/texmf-var/fonts/map/
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Mar 24  2015 pdftex/
and
/usr/share/texmf-var/web2c/pdftex
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root    4096 Jun 20  2020 pdftex/

I think I need to remove /usr/share/texinfo/, /usr/share/texmf-config/,
/usr/share/texmf-dist/, /usr/share/texmf-local/, and /usr/share/texmf-var/.

I thought I had removed all previous TexLive2022 and earlier. Apparently
not.

I'll remove the old directories in /usr/share/ then try tlmgr and pdftex
again.
