Yes, I do indeed have an NVidia card!  But I'm changing out machines shortly, to one using Intel integrated graphics, so will see if that is the problem.  Thanks for the idea about xinit too, I will try that.  And thanks for the suggestions about other WMs.

Found your site very helpful a couple of years back when I had audio problems.  Really helped to fix it.
