editor for preamble

I would try to set the "Editor" for "Format" "LaTeX (plain)" under

"Preferences" > "File Handling" > "File Formats"

You can set a "Custom" editor or choose "System Default" and then change 
the default for ".tex"-files on your OS system wide.
