How to modify tables with InsetLayout

In the help file "Customizing LyX: Features for the Advanced User", section 5.3.10, it is said that by using an "InsertLayout table" one can modify this pre-existing inset.
I am curious to know what changes can I make to tables? Looks like tables are set-up using the many buttons of the gui. Nothing is mentioned about it in the help file "Embedded Objects" nor anywhere in the customization help file.
