Rich, Steve,

that was a rhetorical question of course  :-)-O

I do however find that whenever I find myself using ERT I always try and
look for a LyX way to do it, because I don't like ERT :-)-O

I just found out myself, that on the Mac I can just do Option-0 :-)-O

BTW, it should be \textdegree{}
