Floating figures disappearing when using multicols package

When using the multicols package, floats will not appear.

And by setting the document settings to two columns and alternating between one and two columns using \onecolumn and \twocolumn, I can't seem to smoothly alternate between one and two columns on the same page. It seems Lyx creates a page break when you do this.

You can bypass this page break by using multicols, but then you encounter the figures problem

shouldn't the setting of a float default for one column?
