Floating figures disappearing when using multicols package

Hi,

So I am trying to create a document in which the abstract is one column, and the following text is in two columns. I understand I can simply use \onecolumn and \twocolumn to switch between both formats, however, in doing so it seems to create a page break.

I have gone ahead to use multicols to fix this issue. However, I am aware that floats do not appear in multicols environment. I want my figures to span the width of the column and no the whole document.

Is there a way around this?
