Maybe you can still start this old setup as a workaround?

Never noticed that. Perhaps it's worth starting a new thread?
Here, in this case I get the accents and the _double_ newlines, which
become a single newline in LyX...

... whereas in that case I still get the accents, and the newlines, but
the double newlines become single. Strange.
