This is probably related to government cuts, though they do not say so 
explicitly. Universities all over the US are having to plan for 
significant reductions in funding, and lots of difficult decisions are 
having to be made. A great deal of research here is funded by the 
federal government, some of which helps fund the infrastructure needed 
to support that research. But apparently science is not worth it, since 
it might tell you something you don't want to hear (e.g., that climate 
change is not a hoax, that vaccines work and do not cause autism, etc).
