My guess is that it was in 2017 when I wrote f1dd80f464b46f61:

    * the language arabic_arabi also sets leqno by default. This is
       currently hardcoded for lack of a better idea.

I tried again, and indeed I do not see that. I see though that numbers 
are like )1(. Is this expected?
