Entering a math macro using <up> or <down> does not display correctly

In the attached screenshots, if I enter from below, then the painting is strange. In this case, I put the cursor in the word "formula" and pressed <Up>. I attach this "bad" case as "enter-from-below.png". If instead I put the cursor to the right of the macro and press <Left>, then things look as usual. I attach this "good" case as "enter-from-right.png".

I can reproduce on x11 (and I think I previously reproduced on Wayland).

Can anyone else reproduce?
