When I need to copy and past from (wx)maxima I always copy and past the
formula in math mode.
Then in order to remove the extraneous curly brackets I search for
corresponding opening bracket (bra ?! too much quantum mechanics :-D )
and I delete it from inside, in my case coming from the right I use the
backspace to delete it.
LyX will keep the brackets balanced and it will remove the
corresponding closing bracket. Basically this is the same as dissolving
a text inset.
The reason why it is necessary to do this manually is because some of
the curly brackets need to be there.
I hope that this helps, best regards,
