Yes, I have all of the above plus
EGREP='/usr/bin/grep -E'
at the end. 
My guess is that this variable is later evaluated in the make
process and thus the fail if empty.

Can you share the exact autogen/configure sequence and params so I can try to
reproduce your workflow?
