Me, too. And I still am. I wish we had an option to opt-out to the
previous behavior where it was more clearly visible which kind of dash

The next thing people will ask for then, is this stupid word habit of
(sometimes) auto-transfering a hyphen to an endash if it is surrounded
by space.

I remember the reason for the dash thing was that representation in
work area and output differed due to TeX ligatures, and some people
were irritated by that.
So if we want to be consistent on this line, we have to handle ff, fff,
fl and fi, not ellipses.
