Setting "\tempdir_path" before first start

Did you try to set that in lib/lyxrc.dist? Unfortunately, it seems that 
you cannot use environment variables like $HOME there.

Did you try to change TMPDIR or something?

This seems like a generic issue, though. How do other packagers do?
