Perhaps you are right. I really don't know. It might help for programs
that are not in the configure list at all. For example, there are so
many different PDF readers these days. Just to give an example, I
sometimes use the proprietary Master PDF Editor. Its binary has the
version name hardcoded into it: "masterpdfeditor5". If we had xdg-open
at the end of the list, I could configure it how I want, or easily adapt
when the binary name changes. This isn't too hard to do currently by
just using the "custom" box in preferences, but might as well make it a
bit easier.
