xdg-open for 2.4.0?

I pushed against xdg-open long time ago when debian maintainers offered it.
The issue was not security, but the fact that the fallback handlers did not
work well outside the debian framework (essentially firefox started to be
launched as a default pdf viewer on my system).

I migrated to debian years back, so I have no clue how it fares nowadays
elsewhere...
