The patch ensures to compile and link LyX for macOS versions before 10.12 (Sierra as of 2016) (10.11 is El Capitan).
The use of these systems is not recommended, AFAIK.

Yes.
1. IMO, the link back server is a problem with Apple sandbox strategy in general.
