change of behavior in master: numbers on multiline equation are to extreme right

Thanks for the explanation. That sounds like a nice improvement. I'm not
sure of how to improve things with the new implementation. As referenced
above, if we someday implement margins, then that might take care of
things for people with preferences like mine. In the mean time, I think
I will get used to the new behavior. There's not really a reason for me
to look at the line numbers anyway. I just have to convince my eyes of
that.
