change of behavior in master: numbers on multiline equation are to extreme right

Attached is an example. On 2.3.x, the numbers are not that far away from
the equation. On master, they are to the far right. I'm not sure which
behavior I prefer. I think if I'm using a large screen, the distance
between the equations and the numbers would bother me. However, I'm
guessing that this change is due to a fix (maybe the one about equation
labels intersecting things?), and once the feature request about setting
margins is implemented, that will allow some customization of this. So
I'm fine with the change, but I just wanted to make sure it was indeed
intended.
