Powerdot example fails (undefined reference) on updated TL20

On an updated TeX Live 2020, I get the following warning (and many similar), which we convert to errors:

LaTeX Warning: Reference `lastslide' on page 1 undefined on input line 44.

If I change "method=file" to "method=direct" (or just remove that slide), the problem goes away.

Also if I redefine the footer (in the LaTeX preamble) so as to not reference the last slide, the problem goes away.

From what I understand, it is a hook that inserts the "lastslide" label, and I guess the hook gets messed up when "method=file" is used. What is strange is that if I manually add the label "lastslide", the PDF page is referred to instead of the slide number.

Any idea what a correct fix would be?
