Good point. I like your proposal. Another possibility would be to condition the message on the default output format of the document:
Disadvantage of this alternate proposal: if the user often exports to both docbook and PDF (xyzlatex), they will not see the error message until they export to PDF if the default format is docbook5.
Advantage of this alternatate proposal: if the user only uses docbook format for exporting, they will not be bothered by the warning every time they open the file.
I think your proposal is the safest (that way the user is sure to see the error).
