The new version hasn't been released yet. I think they ran into some
other issues to fix before releasing. The author says the following in
case you want to test the GitLab version:

  You could either copy all files from
  https://gitlab.com/axelsommerfeldt/caption/-/tree/master/tex over the
  existing ones
