Ah. It is one of the 8-bit default 8-bit Greek TeX fonts (CB-Fonts). 

So, the question becomes why is the "LGR" font encoding used for Greek
instead of "TU".
  Some package seems to recognize Greek characters and does something
(but not the right thing because LGR expects a Latin transcription as
input, no literal Unicode characters).
