LaTeX3 Error: Backend request inconsistent with engine: using 'pdfmode'

This is for instance with examples/Presentations/Foils.lyx trying to use pdflatex.
Same error witth lualatex.
OTOH, if compiled first to dvi, also pdflatex and lualatex compile fine.
