Yes we really should. I was housekeeping the code for older gcc during the whole 2.4
development cycle and dropping support for otherwise functional frameworks just ahead
of new major release and thus to break the whole stable series for next 2+ years
is not wise. We should drop deps when it's too expensive and in the begining/middle
of cycle.
